Is Sparkling Water the same as Water?
Getting a carbonator is a sure way to increase water intake. Which is healthy. However, one question many ask is whether drinking sparkling water is the same as regular water.
Sparkling water gets its sparkles or bubbles from the added carbon dioxide in the water. Remove the carbon dioxide and it is the same as normal water. If you see the term sparkling mineral water, which means minerals needed by the body such as sodium, calcium have been added. Many of us use carbonators to make our own sparkling water at home. This contains no added substances apart from water and carbon dioxide. So why then are there rumors of sparkling water being unhealthy for you? Moreover, are these rumors true?
It is true that soda causes harm the teeth and the bones. However, this is not because of the sparkles but because of other ingredients such as sugar. Research into this is however unfortunately limited. Sparkling water does not have any of those other ingredients. As such, sparkling water has the same effect on your bones as regular water does.
A study by NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) entitled – The potential effects of pH and buffering capacity on dental erosion showed that carbonated drinks possess a risk to the enamel of teeth if they contain sugar. As such, a sweetened non-sparkling beverage such as Gatorade will be more harmful to the teeth than sparkling water will.
The good thing about sparkling water made with a home carbonator is that it contains zero calories. This means that it is a great alternative to soda, and will hydrate you just as well as water. However, you will need to be extra careful when it comes to fruit flavored carbonated water, since it may contain sugar and other unhealthy sweeteners.
Some of you may have sensitive digestion. There have been reports that some people suffer from gas, bloating, burping and stomach upset when they drink carbonated water. If you are one of those, regular water may be a better option.
